Our Beginnings

Multicultural Whangārei was founded in 2007 by a diverse group of individuals and representatives of migrant communities and organizations in Whangārei. Initially coordinated by Settlement Support Coordinator Ellen Altshuler, this group came together with a shared vision: to create a welcoming space for newcomers, foster cultural exchange, and provide essential support services.

In 2008, the group became an Incorporated Society and obtained charitable status, securing initial funding from MSD’s ‘Settling In’ fund. Sabrina Saminadin was appointed as the first coordinator, and the Whangārei Migrant Centre opened its doors in the Municipal Building at 71 Bank Street in July 2009.

Our Team

The Centre quickly became a hub for the migrant community, offering a range of services including language classes, cultural workshops, career clinics, immigration advice, and employment support. It also served as a venue for community events and activities, such as the WINGS Craft Day and a migrant mum’s group.

Multicultural Whangārei’s early success was made possible through collaborations with Settlement Support, WINGS (Women’s International Newcomers Group Social), and English Language Partners Northland.
